Nadal Takes Third Set to Lead 2-1
World number one Rafael Nadal made a strong start to his Australian Open campaign with a routine win over Sock in the first round. Nadal took the first set 6-2, the second set 6-3, and the third set 6-1, wrapping up the match in just over two hours.
Sock, who is ranked 108th in the world, put up a brave fight in the first set, but Nadal was simply too strong. The Spaniard broke Sock's serve twice in the set to take it 6-2. Nadal continued to dominate in the second set, breaking Sock's serve again to take a 4-1 lead. Sock managed to break back in the eighth game, but Nadal broke him again to take the set 6-3.
The third set was all Nadal, as he broke Sock's serve three times to take the set 6-1. Nadal will now face Cilic in the second round. Cilic, who is ranked sixth in the world, defeated Medvedev in his first-round match.
