E. Coli Outbreak Linked to Kitchen Serving Daycares in Calgary

Confirmed Cases Rise to Over 50

A kitchen preparing food for several daycares in Calgary has been linked to an E. coli outbreak that has now left at least 50 children sick. The outbreak was first reported on Sept. 1, when parents started showing up at Calgary hospitals with sick children.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has since confirmed that the outbreak is linked to a kitchen facility that served daycares in the Calgary area. As of Sept. 12, there have been 356 laboratory-confirmed cases of E. coli.

Outbreak Declared in September

The outbreak was declared on Sept. 7, after AHS confirmed that there were 100 laboratory-confirmed cases of E. coli. The majority of the cases have been reported in children under the age of 5.

Symptoms of E. coli infection can include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, and vomiting. In severe cases, E. coli infection can lead to kidney failure.

AHS is advising parents to be aware of the symptoms of E. coli infection and to seek medical attention if their child is experiencing any of these symptoms.

Kitchen Facility Closed

The kitchen facility that has been linked to the outbreak has been closed. AHS is working with the facility to identify the source of the contamination.

The outbreak is a reminder of the importance of food safety. Parents should make sure that they are washing their hands and food thoroughly, and that they are cooking meat to a safe internal temperature.
