E Coli Outbreak Canada 2023

Canada Investigating Major E. Coli Outbreak Among Children

Outbreak Believed to Originate in Kitchen Preparing Meals for Nursery Children

Public health officials in Canada are investigating a significant outbreak of E. coli among children, suspected to have originated from a kitchen preparing meals for nursery children. As of September 16, 2023, 310 laboratory-confirmed cases have been reported, leading to the closure of multiple daycare centers in Calgary, Alberta.

The cause of the outbreak remains under investigation, but Alberta Health Services believes the kitchen may be the source. Health officials are working to identify the specific food item or ingredient that has caused the outbreak and have issued advisories to parents and daycare providers to prevent further spread.

Canada's largest known E. coli outbreak occurred over 20 years ago when drinking water in Walkerton, Ontario, became contaminated with manure. The current outbreak serves as a reminder of the importance of food safety and hygiene practices, particularly in settings where young children are involved.
